Mark Carney's C-Suite Inner Circle Is Selling the World on Canada

Prime Minister Mark Carney is reshaping Canada’s government with a corporate-style approach, relying on an inner circle of business veterans and using his global network to attract investment, expand trade, and accelerate major infrastructure projects. Bloomberg noted that “Carney’s cohort are seen by the business community as people who understand how investments are made.” Supporters say the strategy marks a sharp break from Justin Trudeau’s more regulation-heavy era, with stronger ties to corporate leaders and a focus on getting deals done quickly. Critics, however, warn that Carney’s fast-moving model risks sidelining climate, human rights, and concerns from Indigenous communities, while Canada’s weak growth and slow project delivery raise questions about when tangible economic results will appear. “This government is enjoying a moment in time — and who knows how long it will last — when the public understands that things can’t just be done the way they’ve always been done,” former Liberal Industry and Finance minister John Manley said. “But I think there’s a point coming where they’re going to want to see actual accomplishments.”
