Carney and Trump are holding private talks to drop tariffs

Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump are holding private discussions to resolve the escalating trade dispute between their countries, sources confirmed to CBC/Radio-Canada. Carney and Trump have reportedly exchanged texts and held evening phone calls following Carney’s recent visit to the White House, though no official readouts have been released. “We won't negotiate in public,” Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said, confirming the talks while emphasizing diplomatic discretion. As the U.S. doubled tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50 per cent, Carney warned "intensive discussions" are underway and pledged Canada is preparing reprisals if negotiations fail.
