Canada’s second chance in the global LNG race

François Poirier says Canada has a renewed opportunity to become a global leader in liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, citing geopolitical instability—particularly disruptions in the Middle East—as highlighting the need for reliable energy supply and economic diversification. Despite being the world’s fifth-largest natural gas producer, Canada lags far behind competitors like the United States in LNG exports, with only one major export terminal currently operating, though expansion projects and rising demand could improve its position. Industry leaders argue LNG development is key to economic growth and energy security, but critics warn that major investments in fossil fuels may undermine the transition to renewable energy and face economic, environmental, and Indigenous opposition.
