Canada has ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ to become an energy superpower: head of IEA

International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol said Canada has a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to become an energy export superpower, as countries seek reliable and geopolitically stable energy sources amid global uncertainty. Birol and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, speaking in Montreal, highlighted growing international interest in Canadian energy, electricity and nuclear technology, including small modular reactors. They also said rising demand from AI data centres and increased use of air conditioners worldwide is driving a surge in electricity consumption and creating new opportunities for Canada’s energy sector.
