Canada should lead the creation of an international AI Stability Board to address growing risks from artificial intelligence, including security breaches, inadequate oversight and inconsistent reporting of incidents, writes Paul Samson, president and CEO of the Centre for International Governance Innovation. Modelled after the Financial Stability Board, the organization would bring governments, AI developers and independent experts together to establish common safety testing standards, coordinate monitoring, share information and ensure serious incidents are reported promptly. The proposal calls for Prime Minister Mark Carney to spearhead a coalition of roughly a dozen countries, with Canada hosting a small permanent secretariat, to establish global AI safeguards without waiting for the United States or China to act.
