The Hard Choices of Canada’s China Reset

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Canada this week marks the most significant step in rebuilding bilateral relations since 2016, following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s earlier trip to Beijing and the launch of a new Canada-China Strategic Partnership, writes Vina Nadjibulla, Vice President of Research & Strategy at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. The visit is expected to focus on implementing trade and investment agreements, including easing tensions over agricultural exports and electric vehicles, while testing whether Canada can expand economic ties with China without compromising national security, democratic values, or its relationship with the United States.
