Canada “urgently requires a bold, cohesive economic strategy” to shift away from its traditional role as a raw resource exporter and toward value-added innovation in sectors such as agriculture, forestry, energy and critical minerals, write Burgess Langshaw Power and Maral Niazi. The op-ed criticizes Ottawa’s “scattershot” approach to funding, arguing that “allocating resources to core and transformational areas outperforms scattered efforts in driving productivity and competitiveness.” The authors call for a “mission-oriented strategy” that integrates technology with the environment and economy, partners with Indigenous communities and directs targeted investments toward “grand challenges such as climate resilience and technological sovereignty.”
