James Moore: 20 years of lessons learned from Stephen Harper
Former Conservative cabinet minister James Moore highlights former Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s economic legacy, arguing that Harper’s disciplined leadership helped guide Canada through the 2008–2009 global recession with comparatively strong results, including a faster recovery than peer economies, lower taxes and a return to balanced budgets after temporary deficits. Moore noted that Harper prioritized global economic integration, expanding Canada’s free trade agreements from five countries to deals covering more than half of the global economy by the time he left office. This focus on fiscal management and trade diversification left Canada with one of the healthiest economies in the G7 and strengthened long-term job creation and growth, Moore says.
