From Reliance to Resilience: How to diversify Canada’s trade

Canada should pursue a two-track trade strategy: preserve preferential access to the U.S. while aggressively expanding exports to markets in Europe, Asia and Latin America, supported by new infrastructure, investment and competitiveness measures, writes Stever Verheul in a new report. The report recommends unlocking capital for major resource and manufacturing projects, creating a national trade-enabling infrastructure strategy, applying a competitiveness test to government policy and strengthening economic security protections. It also calls for making better use of existing trade agreements, turning trade missions into concrete business deals, pursuing faster and more targeted trade agreements and prioritizing sectors such as energy, critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, infrastructure and professional services.
