Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed his support for building a pipeline in his first interview since taking office, telling CTV News’ Vassy Kapelos: “First off, I’ve said repeatedly: yes. … I’m a prime minister who can help create that consensus.”
While his stance was unclear during the campaign, Carney now says: “If you want a simple answer on ‘Will I support building a pipeline?’ Yes.” Still, he emphasized a pipeline alone is “not enough” to make Canada an energy superpower.
Carney also signalled openness to revising controversial environmental policies like the emissions cap and Bill C-69. “We will change things at the federal level that need to be changed in order for projects to move forward,” he said. Asked if that includes Bill C-69 and the cap: “Absolutely, could include both.”
He called talks with Alberta and Saskatchewan premiers “constructive,” with Premier Danielle Smith describing their first conversation as “a positive first step.” Carney will meet with premiers on June 2.
