Poilievre to Carney: ‘Steal my ideas’

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre slammed the Liberal government Thursday for delaying the federal budget, calling it “a bad signal” to investors and credit agencies.

At a press conference on Parliament Hill, Poilievre urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to “steal his ideas” and offered to help draft a budget, The Canadian Press reported.

“Mr. Carney said during the election campaign that he had a plan… Well, a budget is a plan,” Poilievre said. “If he does know what he’s doing, then he would introduce a budget so that Canadians know exactly what the finances are.”

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Wednesday that no budget will be tabled until after the fall economic update. The government is instead focusing on a May 27 throne speech and a July 1 tax cut.

Carney has instructed the Canada Revenue Agency to prepare for a one per cent reduction to the lowest income tax bracket. Champagne said it would save a typical two-income family about $840 per year.

Poilievre said the Conservatives support tax cuts but will review the final wording before deciding whether to back the measure.
