Yoshua Bengio says betting on safer AI systems will pay off
AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio says countries that invest in safer artificial intelligence could gain economic and strategic advantages, as his Montreal-based nonprofit LawZero develops its Scientist AI system. Bengio said the goal is to “show that, at equal resources in terms of compute, we can do better in terms of safety and not lose anything in capability.” Canada and Germany have committed up to $300 million to the project, with funding supporting research, computing infrastructure and an expected 360 jobs in Canada. LawZero is also seeking additional government and philanthropic funding as it works toward releasing AI safety products and demonstrating that safer systems can match the capabilities of frontier models.
