Policy Magazine: The Three Mates? A New Australia-Canada-India Partnership

In an op-ed, David McKinnon argues that the new Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation Partnership (ACITI) could be “unprecedented in economic, strategic, and symbolic terms,” but only if Canada proves it can be a “full and reliable part of it.” He writes that the initiative signals renewed high-level seriousness in Canada-India relations, noting that while officials plan to meet in early 2026 “to take the initiative forward,” its success will depend on sustained leadership, provincial engagement, and overcoming long-standing doubts in Canberra about Canada’s Indo-Pacific commitment. McKinnon says Canada’s current posture reflects “a seriousness not seen for decades,” but stresses that the country must match this moment with durable, interest-driven foreign policy rather than “short-term optics and narrow domestic political considerations.”
