The country is connected. But is it secure?

Conservative Senator David Wells is calling for stronger cybersecurity protections for Canada’s telecommunications networks, warning that increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, including state-sponsored espionage and AI-enabled threats, pose significant risks to critical infrastructure. In an op-ed, Wells argues that restricting high-risk foreign equipment is insufficient and urges telecommunications providers to strengthen security through continuous network monitoring, independent testing, rapid vulnerability patching and improved coordination with cybersecurity agencies. He also emphasizes the need for greater oversight, transparency and resilient network designs that can quickly detect and contain cyberattacks while maintaining essential services.
