First Nations-first ministers' meeting brings funding announcements and mixed reviews

Prime Minister Mark Carney met with First Nations leaders and provincial premiers in Ottawa for a historic meeting focused on advancing Indigenous rights, economic opportunities and meaningful policy reforms. Carney announced plans to work with First Nations on reforming or potentially abolishing the Indian Act, while exploring new revenue-sharing mechanisms, including a proposed sovereign wealth fund to support Indigenous economic development. The federal government also proposed more than $2.5 billion over five years for emergency preparedness in First Nations communities and over $630 million over four years to strengthen First Nations and Inuit policing. While Indigenous leaders welcomed the proposed investments and potential reforms, many emphasized the need for concrete action, greater recognition of First Nations governance and sustained collaboration to deliver lasting change.
