Liberal Leader Mark Carney has outlined a plan he says will strengthen Canada’s energy sector as global trade tensions, including U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, continue to disrupt markets. Carney emphasized that Canada’s energy industry, which supports over 700,000 jobs, is central to the nation’s economic resilience.

“Canada has a tremendous opportunity to be the world’s leading energy superpower, in both clean and conventional energy,” Carney said. “We can lead the energy transition while ensuring affordable energy at home and building the strongest economy in the G7.”

Carney’s comprehensive plan focuses on three key areas: energy security, trade diversification, and long-term competitiveness.

Promises include:

  • Investing in critical minerals and supporting projects to reduce reliance on foreign countries.

  • Accelerating exploration and extraction through targeted investments and tax credits.

  • Fast-tracking Projects of National Interest with support for provinces, territories, and Indigenous groups.

  • Increasing capacity funding for Indigenous communities to engage on projects early and consistently;

  • Streamlining the approval process with a new Major Federal Project Office and collaboration on energy and trade corridors.

  • Building an East-West electricity grid to ensure reliable, affordable, and clean energy across Canada.

  • Investing in both clean and conventional energy to reduce dependence on the U.S. and strengthen trade with other partners.

“We will work with the oil and gas sector to reduce emissions efficiently while maintaining competitiveness,” a press release noted.
