Farmers are warning that a boycott of Crown Royal could backfire, with one Manitoba rye grower saying, “If we lose the premium market, which is Crown Royal, then that is definitely a hit to the bottom line of rye growers.” The backlash began after Ontario Premier Doug Ford poured a bottle of Crown Royal onto the pavement, declaring, “I think everyone else should do the same thing,” following a decision by Crown Royal’s parent company, Diageo, to move its bottling facility from Amherstburg, Ont., to the U.S., a move that would threaten 160 local jobs. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew defended the brand, saying, “Crown Royal is made in Gimli, Manitoba, that’s something Canadians should buy and continue to have access to.”
