‘Buy Canadian’ policy takes effect, changing rules for federal procurement
The federal government’s Buy Canadian policy took effect Tuesday, aiming to prioritize Canadian products and workers in federal procurement and protect domestic industries. The first phase requires contracts worth $25 million or more to favour Canadian businesses and materials, with plans to expand the threshold to $5 million by spring and mandate the use of Canadian steel, aluminum and wood in major construction and defence projects. The policy is intended to strengthen supply chains and support industries affected by the U.S. trade war, with Prime Minister Mark Carney saying it will create jobs and make the federal government its own “best customer.”
