Canada in discussions to join $1.6-billion NATO Innovation Fund

Canada is in discussions to join NATO’s Innovation Fund, a more-than-$1.5-billion venture capital initiative supporting defence, security and emerging technology startups, after previously failing to follow through on a $107-million commitment announced in 2024. The Department of National Defence says it is actively considering participation, with support from private-sector investors, as Canada seeks to strengthen defence spending and expand opportunities for domestic technology firms. NATO Innovation Fund officials have expressed strong support for Canada’s potential membership, which would give Canadian startups access to new sources of defence-focused investment and align the country with broader allied security-financing initiatives.
