Canada’s Space Posture Has a Gap. Sovereign Launch Can Close It

Canada is moving closer to developing a sovereign space launch capability after Maritime Launch’s successful hypersonic suborbital test in Nova Scotia, a step aimed at reducing reliance on foreign launch providers for critical satellites and space infrastructure. S. Mike Pavelec, who currently teaches at McGill University and is an advisor for the 3 Canadian Space Division, argues that domestic launch capacity would strengthen national security, improve Arctic monitoring and communications, and allow Canada to control the timing and deployment of government and commercial space assets. With federal funding supporting companies such as Maritime Launch and NordSpace, the emerging space sector is expected to create economic opportunities, retain Canadian talent, and expand the country’s growing space industry.
