Canada fears conflict in the Arctic after Trump threats to Greenland
Kenneth Frankel, president of the Canadian Council for the Americas, argued that debating whether the U.S. and Canada are still allies has become largely beside the point, as Ottawa is now confronting pressures similar to those faced by countries in Latin America. He said the White House has made clear it is prepared to act unilaterally, using whatever measures it deems necessary to protect its sovereignty and economic interests. Frank McKenna, a former Canadian ambassador to Washington, meanwhile, said that although the situation poses a serious, even existential, challenge, the Trump administration’s approach could have unintended benefits by accelerating infrastructure investment, boosting defence capacity and pushing Canada to deepen trade ties with Europe and Asia, even as persistent uncertainty about the president’s next move continues to fuel unease.
