Pressure must come from the U.S. business community to counter President Donald Trump’s erratic, unilateral approach to trade and alliances, U.S. Ambassador Derek Burney argues, particularly as Canada faces threats to CUSMA renewal despite deep economic interdependence that many American executives recognize. Contrasting Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Davos call for order and collective action among middle powers with Trump’s “America First” disruptions — from NATO and Greenland to Venezuela, Iran and Ukraine — Burney says U.S. foreign policy is increasingly incoherent and damaging to trust. For Canada, the response must be unity at home, diversification abroad and working with allies and global business leaders to reduce over-dependence on an unreliable United States, he says.
