Linda Hasenfratz: Canada must look inward and outward to unleash long-term prosperity

As CUSMA renegotiations approach a pivotal 2026 review, Linda Hasenfratz, executive chair of Linamar Corp. and chair of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers’ board of directors, warn that new U.S. tariffs threaten one of the world’s most integrated trade relationships. She notes in this op-ed that “our economies are inextricably linked” and that “Canada is vitally important to the U.S.” Hasenfratz argues that removing Section 232 tariffs is “priority one,” asking pointedly, “Are we really willing to sacrifice making vehicles in this country to continue to protect certain sectors?” She calls for “pragmatic, focused negotiations” alongside major investments in trade infrastructure and regulatory reform to secure a resilient economy and ensure Canada remains competitive in global markets.
