Data Centers in a Grid Constrained World: Challenges and Opportunities for Canada

Opportunities are emerging for Canada as the AI-driven data centre boom accelerates. A TD Bank analysis notes that “Canada can position itself as a competitive location longer term if it can figure out how to connect new data centres to power in a timely manner.” However, “it is going to be difficult to accommodate large data centre capacity due to limited electricity generation and transmission capacity,” as grid constraints already limit near-term development across provinces including Alberta, Quebec, British Columbia, and Ontario. Despite these challenges, the outlook suggests Canada is not out of the global race, but success will depend on faster connection timelines and cost allocation models. "Whatever policies and tools are used, protecting ratepayers from electricity price increases will be important for gaining public support," the analysis says.
