Canada’s Northern Opportunity: From Capital to Capacity
Canada is facing a potentially generational investment wave in the North, with a new Scotiabank report estimating that almost half of a roughly $940-billion national project pipeline could be concentrated in a region covering 88% of the country’s landmass but home to just 6% of its population. Driven by defence and sovereignty concerns, critical-mineral demand and infrastructure needs, the investment could strengthen Canada’s northern presence and productive capacity. High costs, limited housing and services and reliance on outside workers and suppliers could prevent much of the economic benefit from remaining in northern communities, however.
