The Globe and Mail: Canada’s research and scientific spending is declining relative to other nations, report says

A new report from the Council of Canadian Academies warns that Canada’s persistently weak research and development spending is worsening, deepening what it calls a national “productivity crisis.” Panel chair Ilse Treurnicht says, “We need a new partnership between government and business to change the trajectory of innovation across our entire economy.” University of Victoria science, technology and innovation policy professor David Castle warned that without more investments in R&D and creating prosperity through innovation, Canada risks not being able to afford social programs or defence spending. “Leaders across all sectors should study the report because we are experiencing decades of system-level failure to get ahead of the problem,” he said.
