Canada’s export control regime is holding back business
Canada’s export control system is creating barriers for domestic businesses seeking to expand internationally, undermining Prime Minister Mark Carney’s goal of doubling non-U.S. exports over the next decade, says CIGI research director of digitalization, security and democracy Matt Malone. A survey of more than 100 high-growth Canadian companies found that 34% were affected by export controls, with businesses citing lengthy approval delays, unclear regulations and overlapping compliance requirements. Malone urges the federal government to streamline permit approvals, simplify guidance and introduce faster processes for trusted markets to help Canadian firms compete globally.
