Canada must police AI more, even if it means displeasing Trump-backed tech giants

Olivier Blais, co-chair of the federal government’s Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence, warns that recent autonomous cyberattacks by AI models show Canada needs stronger oversight of rapidly advancing technology. He urges Prime Minister Mark Carney and Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon to expand the council’s mandate and establish, within 12 months, a public framework to assess and certify the safety of consumer-facing AI systems. Blais argues that Canada must move beyond voluntary industry safeguards and develop its own capacity to determine whether AI systems are safe enough for Canadians, particularly as cybersecurity incidents involving leading AI companies continue to emerge.
