Theo Argitis: Carney’s red tape moment

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government faces a key test after its 60-day deadline to identify “outdated, duplicative or needlessly burdensome rules” expired Friday, with a new Red Tape Reduction Office at Treasury Board set to track the results. There have been “plenty of kicks at the can” over the past 15 years, from the Red Tape Reduction Act to cross-border regulatory forums, yet regulatory requirements still rose “about 37% from 2006 to 2021, to more than 300,000 rules,” writes the Business Council of Canada's Theo Argitis. While Carney links the review to his broader “Build Canada” agenda, Argitis says “the real test is what happens on day 61 of Carney’s 60-day review. That starts now.”
