Brace for more – and longer – strikes as ban on replacement workers takes effect
Canada should “brace for more – and longer – strikes” following the enactment of Bill C-58, which bans replacement workers during labour disputes in federally regulated industries, writes Daniel Safayeni, president and chief executive of Federally Regulated Employers – Transportation and Communications, an association of federally regulated firms, and co-founder of Hearsay Toronto. In an op-ed for The Globe and Mail, Safayeni argues that the law “dangerously tips the scales too far in one direction,” threatening essential services and economic stability. He cites DHL Express Canada’s shutdown as a cautionary example, writing, “If a global logistics giant faces this degree of risk... it raises serious concerns about the sustainability of services across Canada.” Calling for legislative amendments, Safayeni says “our prosperity and stability depend on” restoring balance in labour policy to prevent widespread disruptions.
