How to save Canada’s troubled forestry industry
Canada can revive its struggling forest sector by investing in modern pulp mills and biorefineries to create high-value products, absorb excess wood chips, support housing construction, and reduce wildfire risk, Tom Browne, Warren Mabee and Peter Milley write in an op-ed. The proposals include building two or three advanced pulp mills, expanding bio-based manufacturing to replace petrochemicals and adopting more holistic forest management that prioritizes Indigenous leadership and local community stewardship. The authors say sustained government support and industry transformation are essential to restore productivity, diversify exports and stabilize forestry revenues amid tariffs, climate threats and declining paper demand.
