Industry Minister Mélanie Joly vowed Wednesday the federal government will prioritize competition as a tool to lower costs for Canadians. Speaking at the Competition Bureau’s annual summit in Ottawa, Joly said, “Let me be clear. This government will be hawkish on competition.”

The minister pointed to her August decision to uphold a regulatory ruling that allows smaller internet providers to use major telecoms’ networks. “The ruling enables internet providers to compete today across the country. This means more choice, lower prices and better service offerings for Canadians everywhere.”

Emphasizing that affordability remains a top concern, Joly concluded: “My message today is clear: Canada is open for business, but we expect companies to compete fairly.”
