CP: EU won't 'lecture' Canada as it pushes ahead with tech, AI regulation, says commissioner
The European Union’s democracy commissioner says he won’t “lecture” Canada or any other country on how to regulate technology, even as the EU pushes ahead with strict rules for digital platforms and artificial intelligence. “It’s not for us to lecture … any third country. Each country will decide their own system of governance and their system of regulation in relation to technology,” Michael McGrath told The Canadian Press, emphasizing that in Europe “it is crucial that we do have guardrails in place.” AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio urged Canada to partner with allies like the EU, saying “together they can make a difference.” McGrath added that engagement between “Canada and other like-minded partners” is “absolutely crucial” to address shared challenges like deepfakes and foreign interference.
