The Ambassador Bridge has lost its spot as the busiest U.S.-Canada trade corridor

Canada’s busiest trade corridor has shifted north, as the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia overtakes the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor in commercial traffic for the first time in decades, driven largely by significantly lower tolls. Data shows the Sarnia crossing handled about 2.1 million truck trips in 2025 compared to 1.9 million in Windsor, with the trend continuing into 2026 as trucking companies reroute to cut costs. The shift comes as delays and rising costs plague the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a long-awaited project intended to ease congestion but now facing uncertainty while supply chains adapt to changing economic pressures.
