Champagne seeks pitches for tax changes, energy policy ahead of 2026 budget

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the federal government will use summer pre-budget consultations to seek practical proposals for improving Canada’s tax system and strengthening growth in key sectors such as energy, critical minerals, defence and artificial intelligence. Champagne emphasized a preference for actionable tax reform ideas over an external review, while signalling support for protecting major social programs, including benefits for seniors and families. The consultations come as the Liberal government faces pressure to deliver on promises to boost trade, investment, and economic growth, with Champagne also urging provinces to accelerate efforts to reduce interprovincial trade barriers.
