AI giants sign federal pledge that Canadian data centres will bring benefits
Twenty-three major AI and technology companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Bell and Cohere, have signed a voluntary federal agreement promising that new Canadian data centres will provide lasting local benefits. The companies have pledged to prevent projects from increasing electricity costs, reduce water use and disclose information about their local economic and environmental impacts. The agreement comes as Canada seeks to attract billions of dollars in AI infrastructure investment, while communities and environmental groups raise concerns about data centres’ impact on power supplies, water use and noise.
