Annette Ryan approved as new parliamentary budget officer
Annette Ryan has officially begun her term as Canada’s new parliamentary budget officer after MPs approved her nomination on April 21, despite opposition from the Bloc Québécois and Conservatives. Ryan, a former senior executive at FINTRAC and Department of Finance official, succeeds interim PBO Jason Jacques and has pledged to hold the government accountable while serving only one seven-year term to protect the office’s independence. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ryan’s fiscal expertise will help Parliament safeguard Canada’s public finances.
