CBC: High-level trade talks continue in Washington as Canada looks for breakthrough

High-level trade talks between Canadian and U.S. officials continued in Washington this week, with Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc pushing for quick agreements on steel, aluminum and energy, following what he called “positive, substantive conversation on trade issues” during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent visit. The negotiations come amid growing tensions after Stellantis announced it would shift Jeep Compass production from Brampton, Ont., to Illinois — a move Industry Minister Mélanie Joly called “extremely disappointing” and “completely unacceptable.” Meanwhile, provinces are pressuring Ottawa to act on new U.S. tariffs, with B.C. Forestry Minister Ravi Parmar urging the federal government to release promised lumber aid “not tomorrow, but today.”
