Enough is enough. Canada must fight tariffs with tariffs

Canada may need to fight tariffs with tariffs as CUSMA faces likely collapse, writes Jeff Rubin, who argues Ottawa should impose retaliatory measures to protect key industries. The deal — viewed in Canada as a free trade agreement but in the U.S. as a managed trade pact — is unlikely to be renewed under Donald Trump, raising the prospect of sweeping American tariffs on Canadian exports. Without action, sectors like steel, aluminum and especially autos could face severe job losses, prompting calls for Canada to respond in kind to preserve its manufacturing base.
