Canada’s finance and procurement ministers have ordered senior officials to produce within 45 days “a plan to review all existing and planned federal contracts to find ways to save money,” as part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s push to cut government operating spending by 15% over three years. In a letter sent Thursday, François-Philippe Champagne and Joël Lightbound directed that the plan include “a process for assessing existing and planned contracts to find savings,” a study of international best practices, and steps to prioritize Canadian vendors and renegotiate major contracts in IT, construction, real property and travel. Champagne said the review is “another step in building a more efficient government that delivers for Canadians.”
