Althia Raj: The true character of Carney’s government yet to be revealed

Prime Minister Mark Carney faces rising doubts about his credibility after abandoning key pledges that helped the Liberals win a fourth term. Though he vowed to stand up to Donald Trump, Carney conceded on U.S. demands as “tariff rates on Canadian steel and aluminum doubled in June,” writes Althia Raj. Despite pledging to “protect dental care and pharmacare,” new pharmacare deals are frozen, and Carney has paused the 2026 electric vehicle mandate while shifting to “results over objectives, and investments over prohibition.” Meanwhile, he has embraced austerity and Conservative-style policies, unsettling progressives.
